100 photos from 21 countries
a selection from thousands of Saint Elizabeth illustrations
Saint Elizabeth is the world's best known and most loved Hungarian and
European "diplomat" of faith, solidarity and responsibility. For eight centuries,
she has been working tirelessly on her diplomatic mission without being
asked or commissioned to do so, as the sun shines upon us...
This beautiful album provides an unparalleled overview of her presence in art.
The reproductions proceed in chronological order. It should be noted that it is
not the masterpieces of the history of art that have been selected here –
although some of them are indeed present in this volume – nor even the
material held by museums, but rather those lesser-known works of art which can
be seen in churches.
The accompanying study, the selection of the pictures and their description
was prepared by Professor Mária Prokopp, the distinguished art historian
of Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest. This album springs from the idea
and work of István Golarits, an excellent Hungarian photographer living in
Switzerland, who is not only a photographer but also a graphic artist and
an organ-builder. It is the result of his dedication that the hundreds of
photos made by him over the years provide such a deep insight into the cult
of Saint Elizabeth – a continuous celebration of a saint loved in the past
and today, in Europe and overseas. This very special album contains a careful
selection of 100 Saint Elizabeth-illustrations from 21 European countries,
dating from the 1230s till the present.
In the cult of her universal veneration, the text may be read in four languages:
English, German, Italian and Hungarian.
